Easter Egg Hunt Doubleheader: Part 2

OK, so the morning half of our doubleheader went great. You got a nice haul of candy from the first Easter Egg Hunt and we figured that was only the beginning. After all, in the afternoon, we were headed to the annual Quad Cities Easter Egg Hunt at the Fairgrounds in Davenport. It's a big deal with radio and television stations covering it and thousands of eggs to be found. Surely that will add to your collection big-time, right?

Not so much. More on that later.

In the meantime, all was not lost. We had a great time on the trolley ride from the parking lot to the Fairgrounds:

This may have been your favorite part of the whole afternoon. You kept asking, "Daddy, can we ride the trolley again?"

Then we got to meet Rookie, the raccoon mascot for the Quad Cities River Bandits minor league baseball team. You bravely gave him a big hug.

Hey, who's that? Why, it's Elmo!

Yikes, is Elmo hugging you, or trying to eat you?

There was a face painting booth. You had a lot of different designs to choose from: a flower, a sailboat, a star... and you chose a crab.

Very nice, indeed.

OK, so we lined up for the big Easter Egg Hunt. At this moment, it became apparent that while there were indeed thousands of eggs to be found, there were also thousands of people queuing up to hunt for those eggs. The expression on your face says it all: "Wow, Daddy... there sure are a lot of people..."

So we waited for the big signal, which was literally the firing of a giant cannon. Boom! (Or, as you later recalled it over and over again, "The big splat!") And a near riot ensued. Children and parents alike practically tackled each other in a mad grab for little plastic eggs.

Within a matter of two minutes, every egg was gone. Two minutes.

Our haul from this hunt? A big zip. Zilch. Nada.

I suppose if we wanted to roll around on the ground in a scrum we might have grabbed an egg or two, but we refrained. I was concerned you might be upset, but you didn't mind. You just wanted to ride the trolley again. And that's just what we did.

  1. Good for you and Daddy. An Easter egg hunt ought to be fun, not a total free for all. I'm sure you had just as much fun riding the trolley again as you would have trying to outrun adults and bigger kids. Lots safer too. Good job, Daddy!
